Flat Panel Detectors: How Digital Radiography Works

A flat panel detector is the component that turns an X-ray tube into a digital diagnostic system. Instead of film development or cassette readers, the exposure appears on the workstation in about four seconds — ready for windowing, measurement and PACS archiving.

Reading the specification sheet

  • Active area. 43×43 cm covers chest and abdomen; 35×43 cm suits extremities and pediatric work.
  • Pixel pitch. 140 μm is the workhorse standard; 100 μm panels resolve finer trabecular detail for trauma and chest imaging.
  • Resolution. From 3072×3072 up to 4288×4288 pixels — more matters only together with a matching pixel pitch.
  • Interface. Wired panels never run out of charge; Wi-Fi panels with a 3500 mAh battery free positioning completely.

Wired or wireless?

A wired panel is the choice for a fixed workflow: bucky tray, predictable positions, zero charging logistics. Wireless panels win at the bedside — under the patient in the ICU, in traction, in field conditions. Many departments keep one of each.

Do detectors work with any X-ray unit?
Detectors are supplied as part of a digital kit with DS.Xray portable units and an acquisition workstation; compatibility with other generators is confirmed at the quotation stage.
How long does a wireless detector battery last?
The 3500 mAh battery covers a typical shift of bedside imaging, and batteries can be swapped during the day.
What happens to the image after exposure?
It appears on the acquisition workstation in about 4 seconds, where it is processed, measured and exported to PACS or printed.
